Purpose
The commercial furniture business fills two basic needs; Form / Image and Function.
1) Form / Image
Form or image is often considered secondary to function and budget but can have the most profound impact on your business. This effect has a direct impact on the business you may or may not acquire.
Example:
You need a general contractor, lawyer, mortgage broker, or even a chiropractor. You have no idea where to start and you get a referral from a friend or co-worker.
You set an appointment and walk in the door of their office. Once inside the first thing you notice is the receptionist’s desk has a phone book under the front left leg. You are greeted and asked to sit on a love seat. It looks like it must have been through several college parties or was purchased at some point during the 70’s and patched with paisley fabric or denim pieces to keep the stuffing in.
The owner is ready for you to come back and you are seated at a table that has a couple of names etched in the surface and the chair looks like someone spilled coffee or grape Kool-aid on the seat. Now you have been in the office a grand total of 5 minutes or less and what is your impression of this company? This company may work circles around the competition and may be able to do the project in half the time, but how anxious are you to hire them? Do you have confidence in the ability and quality of effort you will receive? Does their office project success?
First impressions are everything in business.
2) Function
Furniture has simple functionality; put something on it or in it.
Whether it is a table, a chair, a desk, a bookcase, a cubical or file cabinet, the premise is the same. The key is to select appropriate furniture to allow your business to function as efficiently as possible without excess. It’s our job to discover how the customer chooses to intertwine both form and function.
